Day 4: It’s a beautiful day in Puebla to build some new smiles! The morning started out with triage and follow-up visits to yesterday’s six patients who are doing great! We’ve been able keep them entertained with stickers, coloring books, and by taking “selfies” on a tablet. The transformation in both their physical appeirences and moral is amazing. We’ve been taking “primero” (before) and “despues” (after) pictures of each patient to help document their journey. Today’s patients range in age from two-and-a-half up to 16-years. Our little 3-year-old friend, Jesus, decided to eat a crayon minutes before going into the OR pushing his surgey back at least six hours. Oh Jesus! He was one of the patients who traveled 8 hours to get to Puebla and one of the rescheduled surgeries from yesterday. Hopefully we’ll still have the opportunity to treat him, but this situation definitely complicates things… To be continued. AUSTIN SMILES #smilepuebla14

What a day! The first team arrived at the hospital around 6:30 AM Monday morning for the first day of surgeries. After some searching we were able to round up the eight patients scheduled for today. The ages range from as young as 6-months up to 5 years. All the families seemed to be in high spirits and excited, yet nervous for the upcoming operation. The medical team was on point this morning, which makes sense since the Austin Smiles Puebla team is full of veterans. We have team members who have been attending these trips for 27-years. The two surgeons have been working together for about 20-years. Here is a quick look at the Austin Smiles roster: Team Leader: Jim Cullington Mission Diretor: Leilani Briseño Anes Team Leader: Stan Young Mission Admin: Martha Mashburn Operating Room 1: Plastic Surgeon: Jim Cullington CRNA: Brittan King CST/Scrub: Stella Denny RN Circulator: Liz Fox Operating Room 2: Plastic Surgeon: Dr. Teichgraeber CRNA:...

Day 2: The team arrived at Hospital General De Cholula this morning to prepare for the weeks surgeries and conduct triage. The hospital is a beautiful brand-new facility that opened in just November of last year. We had a warm welcome from the local medical staff and after a short meeting, jumped strait into business. The team headed down to a designated area of the hospital to meet with the potential patients. The energy was high and we were surrounded by people who traveled near and far for the opportunity to be helped by Austin Smiles. With Dr. Cullington and Dr. Teichgraeber (Dr.T) leading up triage, we identified the first 25 patients to undergo medical treatment starting Monday. The local medical staff did a great job identifying candidates for us to operate on, with the first round of 25 patients consisting of seven palate repairs and the remaining, cleft lip. The patients primarily consisted of infants and young children. Special shout-out to our...
